If you're thinking about planning travel, a cheap flight is often the motivator needed to move ahead and hit the book button.

And while cheap airfare might seem hard to find, certain tips and tricks can make it a whole lot easier (many of which we've outlined in detail). One is to opt into email subscriptions that alert you when airlines have sales or they find mistake fares.

My favorite is Scott's Cheap Flights, a newsletter and website for flight deals, in some cases, up to 90% off a typical flight price.

Right now, for the month of August, their Premium level is discounted to $24 for an annual subscription, which is 51% off the regular price of $49. And while the regular offering is free, if you travel often and love to jump on good deals, it's worth the upgrade.

I've been a regular as well as a Premium Scott's Cheap Flights member and think that at $2 a month for cheap flight tips, this sale is one that regular travelers shouldn't miss.

How does Scott's Cheap Flights Premium work

Premium alerts you to deals on international and domestic economy flights, mistake fares, and destinations that are popular for both weekend getaways and bucket list vacations. Most of the time, they're sent to Premium members before regular subscribers.

Deals arrive in your inbox or can be found on the website. In many cases, you'll see deals reserved only for Premium members, which often include the most desirable locations and cheapest prices.

On my home screen, I was shown deals for all members, as well as those that are specifically for Premium or Elite (more on Elite in a minute). When I clicked into nonstop Florida flights, I saw that I could fly from New York City to Orlando for $97. According to Scott's Cheap Flights, that's 56% off the typical price of $220 for that same route.

When sharing the deal, they'll also let you know which airlines offer the price, the travel dates it's generally available, how often a deal like this happens, and how long they expect the offer to be available.

Scott's will alsogive you helpful tips to know about each deal, such as if the cheapest fare comes with baggage restrictions.

At the premium paid level, you may also select specific departure airports to tailor deals to locations that work for you. While free members may select up to 5 departure airports, premium members can follow up to 10 airports.

However, like with most deals, cheap flights require some level of flexibility. Most of the lowest airfare means you might not be able to choose your seat ahead of time or use overhead space.

I once purchased a flight from New York City to Cartagena after receiving an email about the deal from Scott's Cheap Flights. The deal was for $369 down from a typical price of $550. However, I wanted nonstop flights at reasonable times of the day and to choose my own seat and bring a carry-on. As a result, I paid $500 for my flight. So, I still saved off the typical price, but my savings were not nearly as dramatic as the email made it seem.

Does Scott's Cheap Flights include first and business class deals?

Yes, but only with their newest offering, Elite. Elite will alert you to domestic and international deals specifically for first class, business class and premium economy cabins. This level costs $199 and includes Premium deals, as well. We are currently testing this service.

How much does Scott's Cheap Flights Premium cost?

Basic limited memberships are free, but for the Premium benefits mentioned above, you'll typically pay $49 for an annual membership. Right now through August 31, 2021, that price is $24.

You may also try it for free for 14 days at no cost if you decide it isn't for you.

  2. For Premium, the process is the same as above, except you'll also input your credit card information.

That's it, you're in.

The bottom line

If you love to travel and fly often, Scott's Cheap Flights is one of the best ways to find cheap airfare. And at $2 per month for a year, this sale is cheaper than buying a coffee. It's a small price to pay when the Premium subscription can assist you in finding flights for $110 less, as was the case with the Florida example above.

Additionally, if you're planning to travel before the end of the year for holidays like Labor Day, Thanksgiving, or Christmas, this is a good way to try and avoid overpaying for flights.

With that said, cheap flights usually come with some strings attached. And if you are not traveling due to the pandemic, or only fly once or twice a year, and feel less likely to jump on spontaneous deals, you might be better off trying the free service first.
